10) Saves The Day

Recommended Songs:

Coming out of New Jersey is the number 10 band on the list, Saves The Day.  Saves The Day has been around since 1997 and have released seven albums.

09) The Smiths

Recommended Songs:

The oldest band on the list comes in at number 9 and is The Smiths. Headed by front man Morrissey and guitarist John Mahe, The Smiths played together from 1982-1987. During that time they released four albums and still have a strong following. Many would speculate that The Smiths were more of an indie or punk band, but I disagree. Morrisey’s songs definitely had a depressing yet beautifully happy tone to them.

The story of Joy Division is a dark and sad story. The lead singer, Ian Curtis, suffered from Epilepsy and would often have seizures on stage when the band was performing. Curtis eventually committed suicide as  his health was not good as a result of his epilepsy. However, Joy Division created some excellent music and deserves to be remembered.

01) Sunny Day Real Estate

Recommended Songs:

Sunny Day Real Estate was the band that brought emo music from an underground style to the mainstream. The band was very odd, according the allmusic.com, “The group was shrouded in mystery from the get-go: they released only one picture to the press; conducted one interview; and, for some still-unknown reason, never played a show in the state of California with all four members.” Whatever the reason for the anonymity, the band succeded in creating several awesome emo albums.
